Third Attempt @ GMAT

by benny.rajan Tue Oct 26, 2010 5:56 pm

I have had a couple of bitter experiences with GMAT. On both the attempts I got a score of 610 with Q48 and V27. (AWA score of 5.5)

Being an engineer I was always good with maths and I tend to trust my gut feeling on most of the SC and CR questions even though I practiced a lot on it. I think that is causing my low scores in VA. I am not a native-english speaker and I am worried on how to improve my score in Verbal.

I do have a Work Experience of 5+ yrs with a good mix of experience at working on important roles for an IT MNC across the globe. Should I attempt GMAT once more or rather I should concentrate on applying for colleges that might accept profiles like mine? If the later goes well would you be able to help me suggest few schools. I am looking at USA or Singapore or Hong-Kong as the locations for the schools.

Thank you for the help in advance!!

Hi Benny,

It all depends on your goals and expectations. A 610 would be in the 20-80 range at schools like Thunderbird and Purdue, for example. If you think that the schools where your profile is competitive will help you reach your post-MBA goals, then you may just wish to target those schools. But if you find you want to aim higher, than another GMAT attempt might be worthwhile.

Given your score breakdown I would concentrate largely on Verbal -- there are plenty of books and websites that should be able to help you focus on this area.

Best of luck!
