The survival of the publishing industry depend

by Guest Thu Oct 02, 2008 9:24 am

The survival of the publishing industry depends upon the existence of a public who will buy the printed word in the form of newspapers, books and magazines. Over the past several years, however, the advance of electronic media, particularly CD-ROMs, online computer services, and the Internet, has made
information available to the public electronically without the need for printed materials. As the availability of electronic media increases and as it is more easily accessible, the public has less need for printed materials.
Which one of the following statements flows logically from the passage?

(A) Teachers and libraries must promote the
importance of books and other written
materials.
(B) The publishing industry is threatened by
the advance of the computer information
age.
(C) Every member of the public has a duty to
become informed about the Internet.
(D) Tabloids will most successfully compete
with computers.
(E) The publishing industry will survive if
the educated members of the public continue to purchase written materials.

My take on this is E, because it is clearly implied in the first sentence of the paragraph.
what should be the right answer?

E says "The publishing industry will survive if the educated members of the public continue to purchase written materials". The boundary word "educated members of the public" makes this choice incorrect. Maybe other groups of the public buy written materials and survive them.

You have to find something from the passage.

(A) Teachers and libraries must promote the
importance of books and other written
materials.

out of scope

(B) The publishing industry is threatened by
the advance of the computer information
age.

of course , it does.

(C) Every member of the public has a duty to
become informed about the Internet.

out of scope

(D) Tabloids will most successfully compete
with computers.

out of scope .

(E) The publishing industry will survive if
the educated members of the public continue to purchase written materials.

we dont know educated people are necessary for survival of industry. The publishing industry can servive even if babies start using papers as diapers. It can't be answer. It can't derive from passage.

Thanks to all who replied, well done. San, your "baby diapers" counter-example is not only funny, but also a good test for this answer choice.
