the recent photographs?

by ASMAA997 Fri Oct 21, 2016 7:26 am

I have this question and i Found it in this website :

http://www.majortests.com/gmat/sentence ... 2433243738

* The recent photographs of the giant squid are remarkable because they show these enormous living creatures as moving around in their natural environment, whereas previous pictures have been of only dead animals.

A. because they show these living creatures as moving around in their
B. in that they show this most enormous of living creatures moving around in its
C. in that they show this enormous living creature moving around in its
D. because these enormous living creatures are shown to be moving around in their
E. because they show this enormous living creature moving around in a

I chose D, because the word they here is not clear it refers to whom , but the right answer is C. May someone explains for me when we may say that the word that ( he, she , it, they .. etc ) be clear they refer to whom and when they are not clear and the meaning is vague.

* Secondly , " which " as I studied in Manhattan prep. that it must has an antecedent and refer to the word directly before the comma it preceded " which " . But I faced an information that I want to make sure of , That " which " refer to the subject of the sentence before the comma and its ok if it does not precede it directly ..

I am really confused , may someone explain this for me please ?

remember—"pronoun ambiguity" is NOT TESTED on this exam!

the intended meaning of any pronoun should be perfectly clear in context.
if this intended meaning is represented by a NOUN—and if that noun matches the pronoun (singular/plural)—then the pronoun is fine.

in this problem, "they" clearly refers to "the recent photographs...".
the noun "photographs" is plural, so, "they" is perfectly fine.

__

i don't understand the question about "which"; the word "which" doesn't appear anywhere in this problem.
