The ancient Anasazi harvested

by CrystalSpringston Mon Sep 21, 2015 3:17 pm

The ancient Anasazi harvested such native desert vegetation as the purple-flowered bee plant, what they now commonly call wild spinach in northern Arizona and other parts of the southwestern United States.

A. what they now commonly call
B. a plant that they now commonly call
C. now commonly called
D. and is mow commonly called
E. which it is now commonly called

This is a GMAT PREP question.

My problem is : why is the comma legimate here before the underlined part? the correc answer is C .
Per my knowledge, the modifier " called" is always a essential modifier. That means no comma necessary between the nouns and called.

Pls correct me if wrong. Thanks.

not sure where you got this 'knowledge', but you can disprove it pretty easily—just flip your OG open to problem 35 (in the 13th/2015 edition), or problem 29 (2016 edition).

also, is this problem really from the FREE gmat prep software?
if it is, please post a screenshot.

i apologize for the inconvenience, but i would be quite surprised if there were FREE gmat prep SC problems not already posted on this forum. (all of the free problems have been around for many years, and this forum is quite active.)

thanks.

Ron, I cannot provide the screen shot. I saw this question in a non-official Prep software, and then searched it and found it appeared in multi-forums which all marked it as a GMAT Prep question dated back to 2009. So I took it as an old question from offical Prep .

I am sorry if it caused inconvenience to you. My intent was only to resolve my puzzle.

ok...

i do not know what 'non-official Prep software' is.

perhaps you're just being cavalier about capital letters. "GMAT PREP" or "GMAT Prep" or "Prep" should be used ONLY to refer to the software provided by GMAC.
