Switching Jobs before Fall Application

Current Job: Real Estate Property and Debt Advisory at Big4
Potential Future Job: Change practices into an industry agnostic M&A advisory position (same title, diff group)

Short Term post MBA aspirations: Real Estate Private Equity, or General PE/Management Consulting
Long Term Aspirations: Set up my own fund (RE focused)

I have the opportunity to switch groups, and could do it now. I am concerned by a few things. My post MBA goal is to get a job in real estate private equity, or depending on the opportunities there, work in general PE or management consulting. Real Estate Private Equity in general wants you to have previous private equity experience (similar to all PE) or consulting.

I am concerned however that moving groups could look bad on my application. Also, I am not sure what adcom will think of my story. Financially there is no gain. Just experience on my resume and perhaps the ability to earn another letter of recommendation.

Hi! Before you move groups, you need to ask yourself what will you gain from the move and how will the move help your career. I am not against moving groups in the months before you apply to business school so long as you can make a reasonable argument in your application as to why your career shifted. Maybe you wanted to learn a new set of skills? Maybe there was an opportunity to be part of a growing sector? Whatever it is, you need to be able to tell the AdCom that the move was worth your while.
