Simple Gerund Parallelism

by dvd.vinay Fri Feb 08, 2013 10:54 am

Hi,

What's wrong with the following sentence?

Dr. King's "er from a Birmingham Jail" is a condemning of racial injustice and a calling for nonviolent resistance to that injustice.

Underlined part is replaced with action noun phrases, but as I understand Condemning... and Calling for.. are simple gerund phrases and they should be considered parallel. No?

sure they're parallel, but neither one is grammatically correct on its own. you can't have "a condemning" or "a calling"; you would have "a condemnation" or "a call"..

be+ condemn-ing would be correct?
is condemning, is calling
a calling = religious mission
a condemning = don't exist i guess?
