selection of school --- help

by vineet3183 Thu Sep 10, 2009 12:20 am

GMAT Score - 720 (Q50 (93 percentile), V38 (83 percentile)), overall 94 percentile
GPA 3.61 (out of 5)
Work Experience - 3
Steel Industry

I did my b.tech in mining engineering from one of the premier institute in India. After that, I am working as mining engineer. Help me in shortlisting the b-school school list.
As i am from very diversified background(mining), will this help me in any way????

I have sent my score to -
University of Virginia
Indian School of Business
NUS, singapore
University of Chicago
Duke University
plz tell me whether I have any realistic chance of making it through to any of these schools?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

Hi Vineet, thank you for your inquiry.

Mining is an interesting and less common industry so in that regard yes, your application will stand out. You have a solid GMAT score for the schools you have selected and a reasonable amount of work experience. But beyond that I cannot really comment on your candidacy since you did not address so many aspects of what the committee looks for - community involvement, demonstrated leadership and increasing responsibility, strong recommendations, clearly defined and logical goals, etc. There is far more to the application than simply grades and GMAT!

Good luck,

Congratulations on increasing your GMAT score so much; that must have been very gratifying. Most schools look only at your highest score and a vast number of applicants take the GMAT more than once, so I think you should have no concerns on that front. Your good Verbal score should offset concerns about the AWA.

The high GMAT score will also help alleviate some concerns about your GPA, which is unfortunately low for the schools on your list. You should consider writing the optional essay explaining it, and also look for stories underlying the overall GPA, like higher grades in the later years or in your major or more rigorous classes.

Good luck.
