Poor score in GMATPrep 580 (Q -47 , V-24)

After all the practice that I did for the past few months, I was only able to score a meagre 580 (Q -47 , V- 24) in one of the GMAT Prep exam. Quants has never been a problem since I have been scoring over 45 for most of the practice tests that I took (both MGMAT and GMATPrep). But the verbal sectio...

Re: Is it time to reinvent strategies?

Stacey, I wrote the GMAT last week and I also felt that the level of the questions on the GMAT has increased quite a lot. Verbal is tougher than any material available. Quants is way too difficult. Not only the questions, I also feel that algorithm used to deduce the score has changed and it is much...

Re: Is it time to reinvent strategies?

Stacey, Actually my previous GMAT score was 630( Q(49) , V(26)). I was confident that I will be able to atleast score a 680 this time around. I never felt that my quants preparation was down this time around. Although let me admit that I did get some real tough questions in first 10 of quants, one o...

Re: Confusion in - SC Question BANK-Q 7

Ron, I have two questions regarding this problem. 1. In the study hall of 25th Oct-2012, you mentioned that though ,like although , should always be followed by a complete sentence. For instance: Though Sentence X , Sentence Y. Sentence X should be a complete sentence. But here in the correct choice...

Re: Confusion in - SC Question BANK-Q 7

Hi Tim, Thanks for your update. Here is the GMAT Prep question where VERB-ING doesn't seem to modify the preceding clause before COMMA :- A study by the ocean wildlife campaign urged states to undertake a number of remedies to reverse a decline in the shark population, which includes the establishme...

Re: Confusion in - SC Question BANK-Q 7

Hi Ron, I have just encountered another problem where the COMMA + VERB-ing is not referring to the clause before it. Here is the post http://www.manhattangmat.com/forums/what-appears-and-appear-t14140.html. The correct option :- Researchers in Germany have unearthed 400,000-year-old wooden spears fr...

Re: Confusion in - SC Question BANK-Q 7

Tim, My understanding of the problem after you clarified is as follows 1. "stunning" is not a valid adverbial modifier(used to modify the entire clause preceding the COMMA) here. 2. While "stunning" is used as an adjective to modify "evidence" which itself is a noun mod...

Re: SC : astronomical phenomena

Ron, In one of your post you have mentioned that constructions such as [PREPOSITION]+[NOUN]+[VERBING] are considered fatally awkward. Therefore we can eliminate such choices. But in the correct answer E, we have this type of construction. interaction of two stars orbiting each other While I understa...

Re: SC : astronomical phenomena

Ron, As you explained in the post , in which you have pointed out the following example and mentioned the construction (preposition) + NOUN + VERBing is usually WRONG. i've never heard of bees stinging dogs Therefore, I thought the construction the interaction of two stars orbiting each other is wro...

Re: SC: parallelism

Hi Ron, Is the use of "due to" correct in the option A. The "due to" seems to incorrectly modify "people". A) surfing appeals to people due to the sport’s unusual confluence of adrenaline, skill, and high paced maneuvering, an unpredictable backdrop that is, by turns, g...

Re: "plural X + preposition + Y, which have" - which refers X?

Ron,

Why is the option C) incorrect ?
I understand that although is a subordinating conjunction i.e "although" needs a subject and verb. But,as I see in one of the forums, a subordinate clause can omit a subject and verb when their presence is clearly understood.

Thanks

Re: SC: parallelism

Tim, I referred to the study hall of the 23rd-Sept-2010, in which Ron explained the use of due to [can be replaced by "caused by"]which needs to modify the noun preceding it in a construction such as "Subject +Verb+Object +Due to" . Also in the sentence ["surfing appeals to ...

Re: SC: In July 1965 Mariner IV passed by Mars

Ron,

Can you explain the difference and the use of the "which" and the appositive modifier "photos" here ?
Also, in the current problem, is the use of any one of two modifiers preferable than the other one. ?
