Re: THcontinental United States receives an average of 30 inches

I'm still not sure if I follow why "transpiration from soil and from plants" is not a compound subject. I understand that we can interpret "from soil and from plants" as a long prepositional phrase modifying the singular subject "transpiration", but how can we know when...

Re: Ron's Advice on Comparison and Omission

-- gas prices were higher in 2007 than those in 1997. 1/ right-hand element = "[gas prices] in 1997" (meaning of the pronoun is obvious, i hope) 2/ we want to compare prices, so the set-up is ok 3/ nothing works on the other side. we need "gas prices in 2007" (in one piece), but...

Re: THcontinental United States receives an average of 30 inches

I'm not sure if I fully understand your explanation. Why can't we interpret this sentence as transpiration from soil and transpiration from plants the same way we interpret benefit from benefit of applying interdisciplinary approaches and benefit of fostering cooperation across multiple teams and di...

Can "it"acts as both pronoun and placeholder in one sentence

Hello Manhattan expert, Can you please tell me if one sentence can use "it" as a pronoun for a noun and also as a dummy pronoun for either an infinitive subject/object or that-clause subject/object? Or is that consider as a pronoun error? I came across this sentence in the Problem Set in C...

Collective noun - singular/plural

Hi Manhattan experts! I have a question regarding the collective noun and if we should treat it as singular or plural. Is it safe to say that we should always treat the collective noun (such as data, board, etc) as singular unless the question gave clue in the non-underlining part, indicating that t...

Re: FOR INSTANCE vs FOR EXAMPLE vs SUCH AS

"For example" and "for instance" are essentially identical. Grammatically, they are used in exactly the same way as is "per esempio" in Italian. Hi Ron, I also came across a question with the split of "for example" and "such as". It was a paid GMAT ...

Re: Can "it"acts as both pronoun and placeholder in one sentence

Thanks Sage! Just to confirm that it's ok to have these two "it" in this sentence and each has different purpose only because one of them is a dummy pronoun right? If I have two "it" in one sentence and each actually refers to a different noun (not dummy pronoun), then it would b...

the use of "though"

Hi Manhattan experts, I have a question regarding the use of "though". I know that "though" can be used as either adv and conj. My question is that when "though" is used as conj , 1) does it always has to be followed by a clause (subject + verb), and 2) does it always h...

compound subject

Hi Manhattan expert, I have a question regarding the usage of compound subject + adj modifier. In sentences below, can you please let me know if the that clause adj modifier and the verb-ing adj modifier can modify only the second noun or do they have to modify both noun 1 and noun 2? From the meani...

Re: Sales of wines declined in the 1980s

is there any difference between "in particular" and "particularly" we should know about?

Does "in particular" = "particularly"?
