Factoring

What would(a-b)^4 look like completely factored.

I assumed it would be (a-b)(a+b)(a-b)(a+b).

Where did I go wrong???

When to use triangle ratio's: 1:1:square2 and 1:square3:2

I have a question regarding triangles and the measurements. It is my understanding that for an isosceles right triangle and an equilateral 30-60-90 triangle all you need is a measurement from one side of the triangle in order to find the other sides (i.e. 1:1:x square root of 2. or 1: X square root ...

Fractions:Simplifying Fractions

FDP Strategy Guide pg. 39, #6 2007 edition. Simplify 10x/5+x Answer: Cannot be simplified. My question is why can't you simplify in this case? Is it because the numerator is multiplying the variable and the denominator is adding the variable? If it was 10+x/5+x could you simplifiy? or more obviously...

Fractions: Denominator equal to zero.

If I came across a question where it asks me which one cannot be the answer to the following:

5/X -5

I would assume the answer would be X=5 because 0 cannot be in the denominator, is that correct?

Modifiers: Well

On page 73 of the 2007 Strategy Guide they mention that WELL can modify either an adjective or a noun. However, I get confused in the example: Amy is feeling WELL. (Well is an adjective modifying the noun Amy) Amy writes WELL. (Well is an adverb modifiying the verb writes.) My question is if well is...

Tenses

I have a question about tense however it is in the Modifiers Strategy Chapter on pg. 76 of the 2007 Strategy Guide. The section mentions introducing a relative pronounto avoid awkward sentences. Example: We test-drove a car having engine trouble. We test-drove a car that had engine trouble. Doesn't ...

Tenses: When to use two tenses and when to use the pefect?

Hi, I have a question on when to switch between tenses (two in the same sentence) and when to use the Present Perfect and Past Perfect. For instance in the 2007 study guide (pg. 45) the is a sample sentence: "He IS thin now because he SPENT the last six months on an intensive diet." Is thi...

Came accross this question...

Is the integer N a multiple of 15?

N is a Multiple of 20

N+6 is a multiple of 3.

The right answer is C. But how can you use the 3 from part B if it is refing to N + 6.

Algebraic Equations

Keep getting this problem wrong. y(3x-5/2)=y I can think of a number of different ways to solve this problem, but only one way is right. I don't know what makes that the right way. It appears you should first divide both sides by y, so 3x-5/2=1. Then solve the rest. But why can't you first multiply ...

Re: Algebraic Equations

Hi, That is the entire problem. It's not a ds prob. Quick question about your response. Why would it be 6x-5=y. If I multiply both sides of the equation by two wouldn't the denominator cancel. ie.(3x-5)/2=y which is 3x-5=2y...(removed the one y from the problem for clarity sake). But most of all tha...

MGMAT CAT#1:Exponents/Algebra

Hi, I came across this data suff. in the MGMAT CAT#1.

8a(1/4)b = ?

(1) b = 1.5a
(2) a = 2

The correct answer is (A).

I understand why (A) is sufficient, but why isn't (B). The explanation says 3a-2b. So we can plug in A and set 3a-2b to 0. Well why can't you do that for (B)?

Data Suff: Sides of a Triangle. CAT Exam #2

I posted the entire problem below. I felt that either answer should be sufficient. If you have a large triangle and within that triangle you know for a fact that one of the two smaller triangles in a 30-60-90, why can't you assume the other smaller triangle is a 30-60-90? The correct answer was C. I...

Re: Data Suff: Sides of a Triangle. CAT Exam #2

Thanks. I knew that if there are two 30-60-90 triangles within a larger triangle then you know the larger triangle is an equaliteral triange. But you cannot assume that if one of the smaller triangles is a 30-60-90 then the other has to be a 30-60-90. Thanks again.
