Score Evaluation Please!!

by vijayallenraj123 Mon May 10, 2010 1:46 pm

Hello Folks--

I just took my GMAT and scored a 680(47 Q, 35V). I plan to apply to universities like INSEAD, Nangyang Business School, Hong Kong UST, IMD Switzerland etc., Can any of you evaluate my score and let me know if this score is good enough for these schools mentioned above? Furthermore, I have 6 years of experience in the software field with a global giant, have some good extracurricular activities like stage events and culturals at school, martial arts and I am currently involved with some NGOs and sponsor a couple of poor kids education. And I have a percentage of 75% in my undergraduate (I am from India and here we dont have a GPA).

Can any of you please let me know if my profile and scores are competitive? Or would you recommend taking the GMAT again?

Your score is pretty uneven so that might raise a red flag. If you can achieve a more even score, then you would be in a better position. I am not familiar with all of the schools on your list since we work with the top US/European programs. However, here is INSEAD's stance on the GMAT (taken from their website):

The average GMAT of INSEAD participants is 700, however the range is typically 600 to 800. And actually what we are looking for is a reasonable score in both the quantitative and verbal parts of the test, not necessarily a high overall score. We advise candidates to target 70th percentile in both the quantitative and the verbal (in case you are wondering, this gives an overall score of about 610). If your percentiles are much below this, we would advise you to retake the test. I know the GMAT is not the most fun part of the admissions process (I've done it myself, being an INSEAD alumna, and know what a pain it is to have to prepare for this rather intimidating test in your spare time when you are already working a 60-hour week) but we do see a correlation between GMAT scores and academic performance on the programme, and so we do value the information that the GMAT score gives us.

Hi,

Thanks a lot!!. Guess I will have to take it up again next month. Will work on the verbal part. Will a score of say 47Q and 40V be considered balanced and adequate?

I'm not sure what the corresponding percentiles are...but strive for scores that are relatively close! Best of luck!

Well, I am a bit confused. What do the B schools look for? Is it the scaled score (47, 35) or is it the individual percentile scores which would be 47 = say 85% and 35 = 70%??..

An even score refers to "percentiles" that are relatively even.

Best of luck with the next exam!
