I'm going to push you to do a little of the work here. Notice that we have the word "unlike" starting the sentence. Unlike is used to compare two nouns. What are the nouns compared using answer choice A, and what are the nouns compared using answer choice D?

Choice A compares the noun "innovative study." "that" stands for the innovative study.
Choice D compares "earlier works" and "innovative study"

But I just quite not understand why A does not say " that of his earlier works." if do so, the sentence would be more clear.

Correct me if I am wrong. Thanks!

I also went for D.
In (A) are we suppose to compare:
Unlike that of(the studies of) earlier works on slavery, Blassingame’s innovative study

The answer is definitely (d), not (a).

however, this problem is NOT, as far as we know, from the GMAT PREP SOFTWARE. a quick search reveals that it is from the "gmat sets", which are a banned source on this forum (please read the forum rules!).
