This, That, These, Those....this topic is confusing me with comparison topics because that is also used in comparison.

Page 73:
Q 5: Some people believe that the benefits of a healthy diet outweigh that of regular exercise
Ans: Some people believe that the benefits of a healthy diet outweigh ( those) of regular exercise

Q 13. Our cat is cuter than those in the shelter
Ans: Our cat is curer than the cats in the shelter.

why are these sentences solved with different strategies?

these problems are solved with exactly the same strategy, namely that the pronoun should agree in number with an antecedent that is present in the sentence..

on 5, "benefits" is plural so you need a plural pronoun, in this case "those"..

on 13, since we are comparing the cat to multiple cats we cannot use a singular pronoun to replace multiple cats. in fact, since "cats" does not appear elsewhere in the sentence there is no pronoun we can use in the second half of the sentence..
