Salary History

by kschrinsky Mon Sep 14, 2009 1:02 pm

Hello,

My base salary has always been $10-$20K lower than my actual take-home pay due to the fact that I am qualified for overtime and often am working longer hours. Is it okay to just note my base pay for the data sheets, or do I need to note the overtime pay as well? This is difficult since it changes every year depending on the hours worked, and I am guessing that they probably want to see progression more than actual dollars earned, but don't want to leave anything out if it would help my case, of course!.

Annual bonus also changes every year, but I'm sure that's an issue for many people. Is this something worth mentioning in the optional essay?

Thanks for your guidance as always!

Hi Kate -

Some schools ask separately for bonus; it's fine to put a range there, or to put your most recent bonus. In terms of the overtime hours, my best advice is to call the school and ask how they'd like you to handle it. My instinct is not to spend the optional essay discussing it, but they can guide you better.

Good luck!
