Round 2 app - Seek your advise

by kiran.raze Wed Nov 25, 2009 4:51 am

Hello ,

I am an Indian Candidate(Male), have a 710 GMAT (50,35,5.0) . My profile is as follows:

Professional Experience

Approximately 4.4 Yrs by Sep 2010
2.5 yrs in business consulting for PWC - IBM BCS, majorly focussing on areas of process improvement & strategy across the telecom domain for leading operators in India.

1 Yr experience in a start-up company, was responsible for account management & business development. {Delivered tangible results there as well, with new account wins & target completion}

Now currently working in Kualalumpur, malaysia for the past 8 months for a A large consulting organization again in the process & strategy consulting domain for a leading telecom operator.

Had a promotion in a span of 2 yrs in India as a senior consultant which is unprecedented at my level (many people take atleast 3-4 yrs overall minimum for a similar jump). Overall , I have had an above average career & financial growth.

Acads

6 Years of education in Moscow, Russia.
B-Tech (Computer Science) - 67% (First Class) from an Indian University (University of Calicut)
PG Diploma in Telecom Management - 70.3 % (Top 5% in Class) (Symbiosis International University, India) (I tried to make up for the lack of stellar acads during my undergrad here, landed up top 5% of my class & a day 0 placement)

Extra-Curricular

A year of association with a old age home during my PG & regular participant in blood donation camps.
Was part of the placement committee at PG level for a year.
Actively took part part in voluntary Local Community activities (after college) - Collect donations from Alum & other friends & family for social welfare activities like Blankets distribution during winter to poor people, sponsoring children for medical care, educational activities e.t.c. But these activities are all voluntary & not under the aegis of a formal set-up.
Was also part of Annual research forecast conducted by our institute , which was presented by 2 people(I being one of them) to a forum of people from the Telecom Industry (Industry visionaries, Regulators, C Level execs etc) (This entire exercise was a 6 month exercise)

In future I want to get into Management consulting(strategy / operations) & long term - Social Entrepreunership.

Which Colleges would be a good fit for me , I am confused over the fllowing choices :-

1. Booth
2. MIT
3. Tuck
5. Yale
6.Ross
7.UCLA
8.Darden
9. Cornell

I want to apply to just 3-4 schools ... Can you please advise ? It would also be great if you could list out my stretch, probable & safe schools (please feel free to add any schools that I may not have listed here).

Do you feel that in case I retake the GMAT and look at improving my score to say 740 + , Would it benefit my cause (As I have taken the GMAT only once, and I feel a 740 / 750 is within my reach , as I used to score around that range in my practice tests). Although I am not too keen to do so if the marginal utility is not too great for the schools I have considered.
thanks,

Kiran

Hello,

I’ll start with your question about the GMAT. Certainly a higher score is better than a lower score, but you already have a very good score so it is not necessary for you to retake the GMAT. If you think that without much work you can score a 740 or 750, I would encourage you to retake it. However, if you need to invest a lot of time preparing for the test, I would advise you to use your time to focus on the rest of the application. If you plan to apply to 3-4 schools, I would say that you would be competitive at UCLA, Ross, possibly Darden. I do not know what schools would be the best in terms of fit for you, but I think that the other schools you have listed might be reaches for you. Overall, I think you should focus on putting together very strong essays in order to tell your story and distinguish your vs. the other thousands of applicants.

Sincerely,

Akiba Smith-Francis
