Retake Gmat?

by Sramberg Tue Sep 16, 2008 1:48 pm

I just took the GMAT for the first time and scored 710 Q43 (68%) V45(98%). I am concerned about the low quant score and am considering retaking the test to try to get it up into at least the 70% range, would this be worth the effort? I would like to get my applications in for first round so I am a bit hesitant about dividing my attention between the GMAT and essays.

I have worked for the last two years as the facility manager and assistant trainer for an equestrian facility in Washington. I have a BS in Plant Sciences from UCSC (lots of calculus, statistics, etc) with a 3.0 gpa. I studied abroad in Europe for the first six months of undergrad. I am hoping to make a career change into biotech. I am planning to apply to first and second tier schools on the west coast.

Thanks!

Thank you for your inquiry.

If you are just taking the test to bump your score from a 68th percentile to a 70th percentile, then I think that you can hold off on another attempt. However, if you think you can improve your scores more significantly, into the 80th percentile, then it would probably be wise, especially because it seems that you had a B average with a heavy quant focus undergrad. The schools want to be sure that you can manage their curricula and the GMAT can help you overcome academic weaknesses.
