Resume Length

by williamscottgarrison Fri Apr 23, 2010 10:13 am

How long should my resume be? I have always heard to keep the length to 1 page, but the website and information session said 1-2 pages. I can’t decide which is better, long and thorough or short and concise. I worry that a 2-page resume will be too long and leave the admissions committee with a, "I’m not going to read all of this, doesn’t he know the standard is 1 page" attitude. On the other hand, I don’t want the admissions committee to look at my resume and wonder, "Is this all he’s done?" How does a person list a summary, education, 6-years of work experience, professional accomplishments, additional skills, and interests on one page?

Ahhhhhhhh! The uncertainty and meticulous nature of the application process is driving me bananas.

Hello William,

Thank you for your inquiry. It’s a question that comes up a lot. You should follow the directions on resume length given by each school. Some schools require a one page resume, while others require a two page resume and there is even one school that requires that the resume not exceed a certain number of lines. So, once you know the schools that you will be applying to, you can develop a resume, or several resumes, that comply with their instructions.

Sincerely,

Akiba Smith-Francis
