Request for Review: MGMAT Analyze Argument

ESSAY QUESTION:
The following appeared in the editorial section of a local newspaper:

"The inflow of immigrant workers into our community has put a downward pressure on wages. In fact, the average compensation of unskilled labor in our city has declined by nearly 10% over the past 5 years. Therefore, to protect our local economy, it is essential to impose a moratorium on further immigration."

Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. Point out flaws in the argument's logic and analyze the argument's underlying assumptions. In addition, evaluate how supporting evidence is used and what evidence might counter the argument's conclusion. You may also discuss what additional evidence could be used to strengthen the argument or what changes would make the argument more logically sound.

YOUR RESPONSE:
The editorial section of the newspaper states that the inflow of immigrant workers into the community had caused the wages for unskilled labour to decline. The editor opines that the decline in wages should be stemmed by imposing a moratorium on further immigration. Such an action could bring in the desired results, but by implying that the decline in wages was purely caused by the increasing inflow of immigrant workers, the editor throws caution into the wind.

The editorial fails to consider whether sufficient workforce exists within the community to take care of the demand in unskilled labour. There is no point in imposing a moratorium when the local community is unable to provide sufficient human resources to perform the job at hand. Without necessary resources, the industry could suffer and as such a moratorium on immigrant workers would do more harm than good.

In addition, even if sufficient work force exists within the community, the editorial does not depict the extent to which these people are affected due to the decline in wages. The 10% decline in wages over the last 5 years could also be attributed to the low inflation levels of the community. It is imperative that these due weightage is given to these factors when dealing with compensatory packages.

The passage seems to imply that imposing a moratorium on immigration workers is the one and only solution to this problem. For example, establishment of a minimum wage requirement for unskilled labourers were would ensure that all workers, irrespective of being local or immigrant, would be treated fairly. Additionally, there could have been umpteen number of factors that had caused the decline in the wages. The editorial fails to give them due weightage. Hence, the moratorium on immigration inflow to stem the decline in wages is unsound.
