Request for Profile Evaluation

by preetivenu2001 Wed May 11, 2011 6:57 am

Hi Daniel,

Before I ask you to evaluate my profile, I would like to congratulate you for such a wonderful forum and site.Recently i have been planning to start preparing for my GMAT.
And I happen to fall upon this site which i would say is an exhaustive resource of information related to GMAT and MBA.

I am a 30 year old working mom(just to give you an idea about my personal background).I have about 7+ year of experience in IT.I hail from India and all my education has been from here.I started my career as a technical trainee in an organisation whose main business is to provide software services to banking and financial sector. From then on over a period of 7 years I have been a part of couple of such projects, developing online applications for leading banks , holding position of various capacity from code developer to module lead leading a team of 4 to 5.
Currently am working as a learning executive in the training and development horizontal of my company. My responsibility as a product manager involves developing internal training materials on various technologies, handling technical training session and taking intitatives to improve the quality of training provided to our associate. In a crux I hold the complete responsiblity of products that I own.Such a role has given me an oppurtunity to explore the corporate facet of my organization.
I have 2 technical certification from microsoft done during the tenure of my work.
I have won 2 excellence awards during these 7 years for outstanding performance and I have about 8 months of onsite(US and Canada) experience
My academic profile is as follows
10th (CBSC) : 77%
12th (State Board) 92%
B.E( Computer Science) : 77%
I had held leadership positions as a class monitor during my school years and had been the editor of my school magazine for 1 year
During college I had given couple of teach back sessions in my class which were highly appreciated by the students.
I have always been recognised for my good communication skills

To pep up my social skills I have recently enrolled my self in the social wing of my organisation which works to encourage and support junior achievers.Since I have recently joined , there is nothing much I can talk about my role in it now but am sure will be able to do so in a few months time.
I 'm planning to take my GMAT sometimes in October(I haven't yet booked the dates ).I aim to get a score of 700+.
Also I'm planning to apply next year as I guess i'm too late for the race this year.

With a profile as mine do you think i have a chance of being taken as a prospective candidate for top 20 Bschools(provided my score is as good as I aim and i work pretty hard on my essays). If not , then what is that i should improve on to better my chances. If possible can you name few colleges where i stand a good chance.
Thankyou!

Hi preetivenu2001,

Thanks for writing in and providing such great detail. Although it will be convenient for schools to lump you into the "Indian IT" pool, it seems that you have some really interesting aspects to your profile, and so I encourage you to really play those up in your essays to make sure the schools recognize this.

If we assume you get that 700, I think the top-15/top-20 range could be in play for you. You'll also have to address the age issue, which you can probably attribute to the fact that you've been a working mother for several years.

Thanks for your kind words and I hope this was helpful.

Hi Daniel,

Thankyou so much for your reply.
I still have one query. As age would be a minus factor in applying for MBA , do you think with a work ex of say 8 yrs, EMBA would be a better option.Would my profile fit into the EMBA pool of applicants. If yes , then can my choice of schools still range in top 20.

Regards
Preeti.

Hi again,

I think you would be a great candidate for an EMBA and top-20 would be in range.

Good luck!
