Request for profile evaluation 640(43,34) - energy/utilities

by g Tue May 05, 2009 12:11 am

2nd attempt GMAT score: 640 (Q:43, V:34).
1st attempt GMAT score 560(Q:44, V:21).
Now most important question.
Please evaluate my profile:
Presently, doing consulting work in utilities industry.
Masters in EE(USA) - specialiation power systems . GPA 3.7
Bachelors in EE(India).GPA- 3.5
Work exp: will be 5 years in 2 -3 months. (80% exp in energy industry, some sales exp but different industry).
Extra curricular activities: Not that good.

Target schools:
1 year MBA schools - ISB, Hyderabad in India
Which schools to target for part time or EMBA or 1 year MBA specializing in energy industry in USA?

My dilemma:

Option 1: Apply this year or focus on extra curricular and apply next year.

Option 2: Attempt GMAT 3rd time(shoot for 700+) , no focus on extra curricular and apply next year.

Please comment.

Thank you for your question. I have a question for you that will help guide my recommendations. Do you think that you can score a 700 or better on the GMAT? If you think that you can improve your score by another 30-40 points over the next few months, I would recommend retaking the GMAT. The new essay questions for many schools for the 2009-2010 application season won’t be released until late June/early July, so you have a couple of months to work on other things, like studying for the GMAT.

The question of whether you should apply this year or wait until next year is a very personal one. You will have to determine whether this is the right time for you personally and professionally to enter business school or whether you want to wait two years to enter business school.

If you want to begin participating in other community activities, it is not too late to begin. As we mentioned in the MBA Mission blog a couple of weeks ago, if you begin working with an organization now and can make a significant impact in a relatively short amount of time, you should feel comfortable writing about your work in an application essay. The key is to make sure that your time with the organization is meaningful.

When I got the score 640(Quant 43), I felt that I could have done much better in quant(considering I was hitting average of 46 in practice tests), but I was not sure about the 3rd attempt(due to some other issues ).
Thanks for the frank reply. I wanted to hear from horse's mouth.

Hope to hit the bull's eye in the final attempt.

Thanks
