Recommendation Letters

by joshpark7 Tue Nov 16, 2010 1:31 am

Hi, I am planning to apply to about 4-5 schools. Many of the schools have lists of questions(ie 1-9) which need to be answered. I'm asking my recommender's to write a general form letter which covers most of the bases for all schools, then to go and make sure for each school all questions are answered on a case by case basis. My questions are:

1. For many of the schools with no word limits, what is a good length recommendation?

2. Do business schools frown upon general form letters even if they answer all questions?

3. Is there a good online template or sample of a recommendation letter you recommend?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hi Josh,

Thanks for writing in.

1) I think under two pages, double-spaced is a reasonable length.

2) I don't think it would be directly held against you, but it's rare that every school asks the exact same questions, so if there is any room to tweak the letters so the school knows it is more than a form letter, you can try and take advantage of that.

3) MBA Mission sells a "Letters of Recommendations" Guide for $15 that provides guidance for recommenders as well as a full sample letter. You can learn more at

Good luck!
