Recent Grad Profile Evaluation

by rdwngs22 Wed Aug 19, 2009 10:01 pm

I recently graduated in 2008 (currently 23) and took the GMAT in preparation for attending an MBA program in 2011. Below is a list of some of my credentials, and I was wondering how competitive my profile is as well as what I can do to improve it.

GPA - 3.85/4.0 Public State University
GMAT - 680 47/37 (On the lower side, but I'm hoping my higher GPA will make up for it)

Work Experience - By the time I apply, I will have 3 years of work experience as a financial analyst for a real estate investment/development company. Currently I serve in a leadership role with 2 analysts under me. However, I feel that my experience sets me apart because I have worked towards the development of one of the world's first completely solar powered communities in addition to traditional investment analysis.

Extra Curriculars - Actively involved in kickball league as well as habitat for humanity volunteer. I know this is one of my weaker areas, but I am trying to improve. Also, I was extremely involved during my undergrad with greek life, teaching, and philanthropic work. Would it be appropriate to use some of this information in essays and interviews for extra Curriculars?

Below are my rankings for program choices.

1. University of Chicago
2. Northwestern
3. UCLA - Berkeley
4. UCLA - Anderson
5. Duke
6. UVA

Any comments/suggestions on how I can improve my profile would be great.

Thanks

Hello,

Your GPA might not necessarily make up for a GMAT score, which may be a bit on the low end for a school like Chicago Booth, but more in line with the average GMAT score of students admitted to other schools on your list. Assuming that you do not plan to retake the GMAT and you feel that your score is on the low side for the schools that you are applying to, you should highlight the quantitative nature of your work. In general, I recommend that you pursue leadership opportunities at work and in your activities, like Habitat.

If you apply when you have been out of school for three years, your college extracurricular activities may not be the best thing to write about in an application essay. Depending on the type and level of leadership, it may be appropriate. I would recommend focusing on activities that you have participated in within the past three years. It’s great that you are thinking ahead and planning to take the steps necessary to put together a strong application in two to three years. Good luck!

Sincerely,

Akiba Smith-Francis
