RC-----Tell us how you do it....

by Guest Mon Jul 14, 2008 11:14 am

I'm not sure if anyone is in the same boat as me, but I simply cannot stand RC. I'll be taking a practice test when a 4 paragraph RC chunker appears on the screen. All that comes to my mind are the same things that I think of when on a bad roller coaster; mainly curse words and prayers hoping that it will be over soon.

The RC passages remind me of boring articles in the newspaper that I read 5 lines of and turn the page. What's worse is that I can't convince myself that practice with other RC passages will help me because it seems like the type of skill that you either have or don't and can't acquire.

From the articles and test scores I've analyzed, it seems that the verbal score has a greatest impact on the gmat score. Since there are 12-15 RC questions on the exam in this category, it appears that success in RC will make or break your score if you can do well in SC and CR.

That being said, does anyone have advice on how to chop these babies up? I try to make passage notes but when I go back to answer the questions, I rarely look at my notes and 99% of the time I can't even read them

What resources have you used so far to learn how to do RC? I want to know so I know whether I can refer to techniques in our books, etc.

There are some additional ideas (beyond what our book teaches) in this post:

scroll down to my second post (4th post overall).

ETA: and you're definitely not alone. Most people hate RC!
