Question for Alex!

by Guest Wed Jul 16, 2008 9:36 pm

Alex,
I have signed up for MGMAT and will be taking the GMAT in a few weeks. Like many others, I have read most of your replies to postings requesting your evaluations and opinions on specified parameters (GPA, GMAT Score, experience, etc) and chances to top MBA programs.

Your replies seem to have an optimistic undertone. However, I may be a bit pessimistic due to the increasing competition for Top 20 programs. Is it just me, or is there a fighting chance for a candidate with 3.3 GPA and 690 GMAT to be accepted to Harvard?! :D
Thanks for all your help!

Not really optimistic.

What happens is that quite a number of people here overestimate the importance of the GMAT and GPA, and underestimate the importance of everything else (quality of work experience, leadership accomplishments, etc.).

As for Harvard, they aren't as big on the GMAT -- they focus far more on leadership potential and other qualitative factors (including your educational and professional pedigree).

So in short a 690/3.3 alone won't shut you out of Harvard. And much higher scores aren't really going to help you either. It comes down to everything else.
