Question about retaking GMAT.

by Guest Tue Sep 30, 2008 10:25 am

Hello,

I just took the GMAT test and got a score of 700. I have been suggested to get at least 740 before I apply for a good business school. My question is: Can I submit an application today with my 700 score, retake GMAT and get a 740 score, and will the school then update my application with this new 740 score? I want to retake the GMAT test during the application process and hope they will use my new (and better score) to evaluate me. Is this possible?

Thanks.

Patrik

With a 700, do not re-take the GMAT.

Even if you do score a 740 or greater, the benefit of the increased score will be outweighed by the adcom's questioning of your priorities and orientation (especially if you're from an analytical background - it just suggests that you're focused too much on the wrong things).

And whoever suggested you need a 740 is seriously misinformed.

Put it this way. A high GMAT score doesn't compensate for a joe average profile if you're shooting for top b-schools. These top b-schools aren't looking for *exceptional* academics, but *sufficient* academics -- and are keying in more on your non-academic accomplishments at work and in your extracurriculars. In other words, your "talent" as it applies to the real world.

Himanshu,

What are you looking to do post-MBA? Where do you want to live (which part of the US or Europe or Asia)?
