QN 2 WORD PROBLEMS BOOK PAGE 21

Hi ,

I have a question to ask from the Word problems text for MGMAT.

In Q.2, per the solution given ,

s+1.5d = 72.5 ------------>1
-(s+d)=50----------------->2
___________
0.5d=22.5
d=45

My question is :
On the right hand side of 1st eqn : 72.5 is "$ value" , whereas 50 is the total "Qty". Is it justified to subtract these together as both are 2 different variables?
