Pronoun reference

by navdeep_bajwa Wed Oct 07, 2009 4:29 pm

hi

i am confused with this

Friendship was something James truly valued, so he disliked it when they talked about him behind his back

This sentence is wrong because "they" do not has referee friends

Then why these below are correct

James and I went on a picnic together
Who are you going to marry

Here "I" do not have a referee
"Who" and "you" do not have a referee

please help

you're talking about first- and second-person pronouns. these don't ever have referents. (it's "referent", not "referee")
the gmat does not test first- and second-person pronouns, ever. so you don't have to worry about these.

(by the way, the second is wrong; it should be "whom", not "who")
