Profile evaulation

by danyoung.dan Wed Dec 01, 2010 7:05 pm

I was wondering if you could evaluate my profile.

summary: age 34, white male, 3.5 gpa, 700 gmat

I'm going to be 34 upon matriculation. I am finishing my undergrad in finance this month. It has been a long journey, but I am finally graduating and will have around a 3.5 GPA. I've been going to school full time and working full time in the fixed income group (retail level) at a large financial firm. I've been there for the last 5 years.

I scored a 700 on the GMAT this fall, 45 Q 41 V.

I don't have many extra-cirriculars as I've been doing school and work full time and have a wife and 4 children. Although I did spend 2 years in Argentina from age 19-21 , and speak spanish fluently. And early on in school I was the president of the Institute of Management Accountants. I also play the trombone, classical guitar, and breadmaking (hobbies).

I want to work in a sales and trading role for a major financial institution. I'm want to apply to Chicago, Stern, Wharton, Tuck, Yale and Tepper. I picked most of them for their focus in finance, except for Tuck, which I picked because in addition to being a great school, it would probably be the best place for my family.

Any thoughts to my choice of schools or chances of getting in? Also will my age have any factor in this?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi Dan,

Thanks for sharing this information. I think your application is going to be unique among the candidate pool, as

1) you will be in the older range of the applicant pool, which schools usually notice
2) you are just finishing your undergraduate now, although you seem to have several years of relevant work experience.

You're aiming very high in terms of caliber of school, but that doesn't mean you can't position yourself to get serious consideration. Let's assume that the 700 GMAT and work experience passes the litmus test at these schools, the admissions office is then going to wonder: Why did he not get his undergraduate until age 34? And, why is he seeking an MBA now?

This is where you can use your essays to differentiate yourself from the standard applicant. Explain your family commitments, why it took several years for you to complete your undergraduate but why you persevered, and why you think an MBA is the still the right move at your age. If you position all this correctly, you may be able to grab the attention of the right people at these top-tier schools.

Best of luck!
