Profile Evaulation Please

by juanranger Tue Jun 16, 2009 11:42 am

Good morning/afternoon. I was hoping to have a few of the moderators take a look at my current profile:

Age: 26
GMAT: 670 (42 Q 64% 40 V 89%)
GPA: 3.0 top 10 liberal arts college with a major in econ and a minor in sociology
Work experience: 4 years for an global financial services company (sent on assignment to Europe for a few months)

My target schools are mostly in my general area such as Villanova, Drexel, and Temple. However, I was wondering if you thought it was possible to get into a top-tier school with my credentials? I know it is a long shot, but I am 100% dedicated to getting into the best school I can, just as I did when applying as an undergraduate.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi -

Thanks for the inquiry.

Solely based on your scores, you may look at some other programs that rank about 20th (give or take) in the BW rankings. Schools such as Carnegie Mellon or Goizueta come to mind. Based on the schools you listed, it sounds like you may want to be in the Pennsylvania area, so Carnegie Mellon might be worth exploring. With that said, it is somewhat tough to gauge your profile without knowing a bit more about your current position, professional trajectory as well as extracurricular and community activities. Would you say that you can point to solid leadership experience at work and in the community?

Might you consider retaking the GMAT? What about enrolling for an econ, stats or accounting class to bolster your academic profile.

Best Regards,
Erin

Erin,

Thanks very much for your reply. In regards to my profession, I currently work for a global financial services company that is headquartered out of Europe (I work in the United States office). I came into the company as a management trainee and quickly worked my way up to a management position. Because I work for a global company I have been fortunate to have worked alongside people from all over the globe. I have even been on assignment numerous times in Europe. Given my current trajectory, in conjunction with the fact that I was captain on my college basketball team, I like to think I have fairly decent leadership experience.

In regards to academics, do you think it would be adventageous for me to try to take alternative classes and re-take the GMAT? Or would it be better to focus on one aspect and really hammer it home? I really stretched to get a 670 on the GMAT. So if I were to re-take the test I think I would need to put a lot of things in my life on hold and possibly even get a private tutor to try to help get me over the 700 barrier.

Any further thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi,

Your work experience sounds quite interesting and being captain of the college basketball team is no small feat!

I would recommend focusing on the GMAT if you are choosing between the two. If you can get your GMAT score up, then you should consider looking at some schools with a higher ranking as "reaches." We always recommend that our clients take a balanced approach to the application process with 1-2 reach schools, 1-2 reasonable and perhaps 1 safety school.

I hope this helps.
