Profile evaluation - where to apply ?

by milan300 Tue Jul 20, 2010 4:44 am

Profile evaluation!

Hey,

I need some help deciding where to apply, and where would I have a good shoot of getting accepted. Coming from Eastern Europe, a "no name school" would not help me too much in my future jobs ... I am interested in macroeconomics and national economic public policy.

GPA: 3.8 (business major, top 50 US national )
GMAT:760
Experience: 2 years at the start of the program (Government in East. Europe, economics oriented)
some leadership in college and some political/leadership extracurrics after college

I am currently considering Yale, Chicago, NYU ... Georgetown as safety?

Any suggestions ? Would I have a chance at H/S/W ?

Any advice is very welcomed!

Hi milan300,

Thanks for writing in. You appear to have some strong academic credentials that will likely be competitive at the top tier of schools.

You will, however, have only two years of working experience, which will be below the median experience among the applicant pool. In order to overcome this I suggest framing your personal statement to clearly state what you want to do post-MBA, how the program will help you get there, and specifically why now -- after two years in the workforce -- is the right time to go to business school.

Additionally it is preferable to focus on post-college leadership where you can.

In regards to school selection, your academics should be competitive at all the schools you mention. Work experience, however, is something that only comes with time, so if you are determined to apply now, it will be important to all the schools that you can explain why now is the best time to matriculate.

Best of luck,
Daniel Richards
