Profile Evaluation & When to Apply?

by hmsoumare Thu Sep 24, 2009 9:01 pm

Hi,

I just Graduated from MIT with my Masters in Computer Science and Engineering (GPA 3.8). I also went to MIT for undergrad (GPA 3.6). Just recently took my GMAT and scored a 710 (Q49, V36). I wanted to know if my low verbal score will hurt me in the admission process given that I come from a technical background?

In terms of Extra-Curricular activities, I played Varsity Basketball throughout my undergrad years. I was also spent a significant amount of time working in East Africa promoting reforms in engineering education at 5 different universities. I will also be working at a top 3 consulting firm starting in January. My question is whether I should apply to B school now or wait till after I have this work experience. My fear is that after I work for two years, all the work that I have done in Africa will become irrelevant. Thanks.

Hi, thank you for your inquiry.

I don't think waiting 2 years will make your work irrelevant. Waiting 5 years might, but not 2. And schools are very interested in having applicants with solid work experience. The two years of work will strengthen your profile, not limit it. I don't know what the percentage verbal was; if it was drastically different from your quantitative or far below 80%, you could consider taking the GMAT ago even though your overall score is quite good.

Good luck,
