Profile evaluation

by bidesh_kar Sun Mar 28, 2010 11:58 pm

Hi,
I completed my GMAT this weekend, got 670 with overall 85%ile breakup is Q-47,V-35 with Quant percentile 78 and verbal 73, AWA-5.5. Seems like i am pretty close to the 80-80 split but not sure how competitive is the score for Kellogg,Duke,Darden,Tepper, and Cornell. These are my primary target schools. To give you more background here are some additional details:
- IT professional with 6.5yrs exp., currently leading a small team. I also perform project management tasks in addition to core technical tasks.
- GPA not evaluated (BS in I.T.). But, my % score in my engineering degree was ~ 84% so i guess that my evaluated GPA would be competitive.
- Career growth has been really good so far with promotions before general timeline and additional responsibilites than my peers.
-Extra curricular -> Not much. Just helped develop a business plan for an enterpreneur through MicroMentor website. Also a member of social welfare org. in my area (but this is just recent).
Any help will be greatly appreciated. I am eager to know how competitive my above profile looks.

Thanks in advance!!

Hello,

Thank you for your inquiry. In terms of the GMAT, you might consider retaking it to increase your score and aim for a 700 (with an 80/80 slipt or as close to it as you can get) to be more competitive for the majority of the schools that you are targeting. Of course there are people who are accepted to Kellogg, Cornell and Darden with 670s, but it’s a bit low for some of those schools and you want to do everything that you can to submit a strong application.

You should also consider taking the next six months or so to strengthen your activities outside of work since you have identified that as an area in which you might be weak. I recommend continuing to work with the organizations that you are already involved with so that you can have greater impact. There is probably no need to find a new organization to work with. Your undergraduate grades and professional experience seems to be competitive. Be sure to highlight your advancement as well as your leadership and the impact that you have had on the organization you work for. Good luck!

Sincerely,

Akiba Smith-Francis
