Profile Evaluation

by luke_onslow Fri Aug 14, 2009 4:41 pm

First of all, I would like to mention that I live and work in the UK. Therefore, I am looking at applying to an EMBA program here. London Business School or Judge Business School is my top selection.

I am a 35 year-old software engineer who has 10 years of professional experience at a well-known US enterprise IT company. I have taken part in several international assignment located in place like Germany, United States and Japan. My managerial experience is limited to leading groups of 3 to 5 people. Nevertheless, my aim is to progress in my career and take my steps in the corporate ladder.

By education, I am an Electric and Electronic Engineer with a GPA of 2.92. My undergraduate education has been in Turkey. After graduation, I immigrated to the UK and obtained citizenship i.e. British/Turkish.

In one month time, I will be taking the GMAT. I am working hard to get 770 as I feel my profile would benefit from such a score.

Do the EMBA programs have a lower mean than MBA programs?

How do you think I would stand in the crowd?

Hello Luke,

I suggest looking at the average GMAT and GPA scores for the two programs that you are interested in, rather than focusing on whether students in EMBA programs in general have a lower mean GMAT scores than students in full time MBA programs. As a 35 year old with 10 years of work experience, you are probably a better candidate for a part-time or EMBA program than a full-time MBA program, so I would focus on those programs.

One of the ways that you can distinguish yourself is to focus on your leadership experiences, both at work and outside of work. Those experiences will be unique to you and will allow you to differentiate yourself versus others with similar professional backgrounds. I also recommend including your recent activities outside of work in your application. Sometimes people applying to EMBA programs focus exclusively on professional activities and this is another way to stand out. Good luck with the GMAT and the rest of the applications!

Sincerely,

Akiba Smith-Francis
