Profile evaluation...

by joe Mon May 25, 2009 10:51 am

Some overall stats:
-- 26 years old, male
-- US citizen, ancestry is from India
-- GMAT: 700 - 42 quant(63%), 42 verbal (95%)
-- Undergrad: 3.6 GPA - Well regarded technical college, but got bachelors in Int'l Business & Mandarin. Heavily active in University groups, managing 12 employees.

Work experience:
1) Worked abroad in Hong Kong for a nonprofit, did my final year of college there too
2) Last three years worked for a large financial services company as a Management Associate, my program was 1 year rotations in Technical Communications, Real Estate, and Financial Reporting. Now one of the youngest Vice Presidents in the 350k firm, as the Emerging Communications Manager (i'm the 'social media' guy).

Other stuff:
1) Conversational in Mandarin and Indian language
2) Worked two years with Entrepreneurship group, now the lead volunteer.
3) Have a long history of entrepreneurship, starting two small business (both failed ;), working with entrepreneuship-related nonprofits, and founding my undergrad university's entrepreneur student group, incubator, etc.

So, I was wondering what you thought about my prospects for hitting some of the top tier schools. Specifically, I was hoping for Stanford, Berkeley, Harvard?, Upenn, Columbia, and Duke. I know my quant % is a bit on the low side, but while working, i can't commit the time to taking the test again. I was kinda hoping I would be an 'interesting case', your thoughts?

Hello Joe,

As you mentioned, your quantitative score on the GMAT is on the low side. Considering that you won’t be taking the GMAT again, I would emphasize your strong academic performance in college and the quantitative nature of your work. It seems as though you should have things to talk about with respect to your rotational program.

You do seem to have a very interesting background and your ability to gain admission to the schools you mention will really come down to the way in which you tell your story and whether you can overwhelm the AdCom with your work/personal/entrepreneurship angles.

Your essays and presentation of your experiences and goals will be the key!

Sincerely,

Akiba Smith-Francis
