Profile Evaluation

by scotthankey Sat Apr 04, 2009 12:48 pm

26/w/m

720 GMAT - 49Q, 39V
3.1 GPA from SMU
Finance Major
4 years W/E - 2 years at S&P doing corp ratings, 2 years in leveraged finance

Just shot in a last minute application to UT, my first and only choice this year. How do you like my odds? Also, by the way UT calculates GPA, I have 3.35.

Also, assuming I get rejected, what about next year? Some schools that interest me are Darden, NYU, UNC, Cornell. And UT would probably be my first choice again.

Thanks.

Thanks for your question.

Based on the limited information you provide, it is very difficult to advise you. It seems like you would be a reasonable candidate for UT as your GMAT and GPA are solid and your 4 years of work experience in finance would be attractive to UT, which would have difficulty attracting Wall Street types. However, you haven't provided any information about work accomplishments, college extracurriculars or current community activities, your references or the quality of your essays, and UT takes all those into consideration as well. As for the other schools, I would need more information to accurately comment on your competitiveness there.

If you're rejected, I would certainly encourage you to apply again, focusing on starting the essays early as well as filling in any gaps in the aspects I mentioned above. We can always discuss this.

Best of luck.

Jessica, thank you for the response.

I have won awards at the institutions for which I have worked. A teamwork one at S&P and top-tiered ananlyst ranking at a major Wall Street I-bank. I was heavily involved in my fraternity in college, where I assumed many leadership positions and was active in the philathropy.

I got 3 recommendations (only 2 required) and I believe them to very positive. Also, I felt that my essays were strong, but who knows?

Does any of this help?

It does help, thank you for the follow up. It seems like you are a competitive candidate for UT, and I wish you the best of luck in your quest there for this year. As for the other schools, they all seem to be reasonable choices for you. With your IB schedule, you may not have had time for recent community activities, which seems like the biggest gap in your overall application, so you may want to focus on that aspect for next year.

Good luck!

Sincerely,
