Hi,
I want to apply for fall 2009 MBA programs. Please tell me how suitable my profile is for the top 10/20/30 B-schools in U.S and Europe .
My background:
1. Undergraduate degree: Bachelor in Engineering (Computer Science) (72%)
2. Worked as a Software Engineer for about 2 years.
3. M.B.A from an Indian B-school. I had a mix of subjects but majority of them were Systems and Operations papers. Other papers were Services Marketing, International Business, Corporate Finance & a few more. (CGPA: 5.86/8)
4. Worked as an SAP consultant for 2 years: led and mentored a small team of 2 other people.-appreciated for people skills and work
5. Working as a consultant with a major Enterprise Software company. -appreciated for my work, always got an above average rating from clients
- lead small projects with 2 to 5 members, that last for one month to 3 months.
- involved in projects led by other people
Hope to get good recommendations from my previous managers.
Extra-curricular:
1. I have been working as an Assistant Editor for a Marketing Journal after my first Bachelor's degree. Thiis is not a paid position, it is voluntary. The quality of articles published in the journal improved as a result of my efforts.
2. Participated in college festivals during MBA: cricket match, painting competition, poster-making.
Member of the Finance committee during first - year (I did not achieve my goal during this stint - so should I mention it?)
3. Teaching at a school run by an NGO for about a year.
4. Reduced noise-pollution significantly in my local community.
5. Won second-prize for group dance competition held at my current workplace, and secured second-position in artwork competition (group competition).Volunteered for Blood Donation Camp and Fund raising event.
6. Provide financial support for living and educational expenses of one child
7. Taught some students (school level to undergraduate level ) computers, mathematics and science (unpaid). These students were mostly some relatives, but does it make my efforts any less valuable? I really don't know.
I had some extra-curricular activities at school level but hardly any at undergraduate level. Will this affect my prospects now?
I also did not get good grade in two of my first year finance papers and did not have Finance as a major. One paper was a problem with a majority of the class. I really want to learn Finance and entrpreneurship and want to go for a second MBA at a good B-school.
GMAT score: 730 (Verbal : 38, Quant : 50) , AWA (5.0)
A year and a half back I thought of setting up a business, and worked on some busimess plans. But, for the long-term I think it would be better to get a good and in-depth knowledge of Finance and develop entrepreneurship skills. I plan to work after sometime in the field of Finance, not necessarily an Investment Bank or a Consultancy work, to gain on the job experience.
I have a specific question regarding significant achievement, or impact on an organization or group essay. I guided a friend and he in turn was able to make an impact in his organization.
Can I write about this experience? It was long - about 8 months and highly complex, lot of HR issues and organizational politics were involved. Although I was not completely satisfied with the result, but still my friend managed to get the truth out.
