Profile Evaluation

by clazzarini Tue Sep 24, 2013 11:59 pm

Hello Jennifer -

- American, Male, 26 years old
- University of California, Berkeley graduate with a B.S. in Environmental Sciences (3.3 GPA)
- GMAT 720 94% (Q47 70%, V42 96%)
- I have been working as a project manager for four years now for a small engineering company (~$40M revenues per year, 40 employees) based in Los Angeles that does military projects.
- Over the past four years, I have managed many multi-million dollar projects as the lead project manager that interfaces directly with customers and suppliers (projects totaling approximately $40M USD in revenues over 4 years)
- I feel like I have strong recommendations and can count on the owner/president and co-owner/vice president of the company I have been employed at for recommendations.
- My goal is to gain a background in business and to work in business development or consulting at a technology company or a green (sustainable) company after finishing my MBA.
- Fluent in Italian, conversational in Spanish

Target schools: Haas, INSEAD, Harvard, Ross, Yale, Duke, Columbia

Thank you for taking the time to review my profile and provide me a some recommendations. If you also have any suggestions as to which schools I should include or exclude from list I would appreciate it. I am interested in pursuing a program internationally (primarily EU) as well as in the US.

Thank you for your time,

Christian

Hi Christian,

Thanks for posting. It sounds like you have a strong profile that would be of interest to top b-schools, if you are able to put together a compelling application (and essays in particular).

Strengths as I see it:

-GMAT
-Solid work experience
-Quantitative management experience
-Likely some leadership and teamwork you can describe (?)
-less typical degree focus (environmental science), not sure if your company works in that area as well?
-potential for good recommendations
-sounds like solid goals

No glaring weaknesses, though Quant percentile could be higher, and as an engineer (or in that industry) you want to be careful not to come across as JUST a technical mind; showcase your 'people' skills and personality as well. ;)

A lot will depend on your essays and your ability to show:
-what about you is unique
-what you'll bring to the program
-why b-school is necessary for you
-why that school is a great fit
-how your overall career goals relate to your past and to the MBA

As for schools, I think you have a good list, knowing that HBS, Columbia & INSEAD will likely be the most challenging to gain acceptance to, but there's a shot certainly with strong applications. If EU is your first choice (??? not sure if that's what you were saying), then INSEAD is a great option, and you could also look at LBS, Oxford, Cambridge, IE and IESE if the Spanish culture appeal since you mentioned conversational spanish, IMD, or even Bocconi (with your Italian). At this point it probably depends on what YOU are most looking for in a school... I recommend our free download about choosing schools if you are interested, http://info.mbamission.com/Selecting-Yo ... ram-E-Book.
