Profile Evaluation

by parag.b.mehta Thu Dec 27, 2012 9:00 am

Hi Team

I wanted to get some feedback on my chances of a top 15 school in the US based on my experience and academics as well as get guidance on whether to take the GMAT again.

GMAT Score: 650
Undergrad: Mumbai University (Distinction throughout: 70%+ all 4 years and had a scholarship throughout all 4 years)
Masters: UCLA (under fellowship and GPA of 3.7.). Also got a scholarship of ~US$ 40,000 from India

Experience: 4.5 years in Investment banking at Barclays Capital in India plus 6 months experience in USA in Analytics

Recommendations: Top of industry with recos from CEO of Barclays in India as well as a CEO of a $10bn MNC

Extra-Curriculars: Actively involved in community work both in USA and India. Closely worked with an NGO to teach underprivelaged school kids in India. Ton of other activities such as with Rotary Club, etc.

While I am extremely keen on applying to the top schools, I want to understand whether my application would even be opened at a school which is rank 6-15 with this GMAT score.

I am planning to apply for Fall 2014 but the very thought of giving the GMAT again and failing has discouraged me to try one more time. I last gave it in Jan 2010

Appreciate your inputs.

Hello!

Thanks for sharing your profile. Your professional experience is very strong, and your academics outside of the GMAT are also strong. It sounds like you have strong community/extracurriculars, but I'm not sure if they'll really set you apart.

A 650 is a low score for a top 10 program, but there are a handful of students that get into these programs with scores even lower than this. So, while you'd have a much higher chance of admissions with a higher GMAT, you have more than a zero percent chance with your current profile.

That said, if you are applying in the Fall of 2014, you have plenty of time to study and retake the exam. I would try. Even if you don't do well, you can still apply with whichever score is highest.

Good luck!
Mili
