Profile Evaluation

by hkavery Mon Jul 30, 2012 4:21 pm

GRE: V650 Q790 (720 GMAT equivalent)

3.5 GPA: BA, International Relations (Top 5-10 public school), graduated in 2 years due to college courses completed in high school.

3.7 GPA: MPP, Economic policy and program evaluation (Top 20
program)

Work Experience: 2 years work experience (upon
matriculation) at IBM as a change management strategy consultant focusing on healthcare and state and local clients. 1 year graduate level internship with government agency, 1 year graduate internship with a think tank. I don’t know where other
IBM consultants have gone, since I’ve been the only non-mba hire in my practice.

Extras: 2 year LDS mission, with leadership responsibilities
over 25-30 volunteers for 1 year. Didn’t go anywhere exotic though. Elected to student government position (not president), President of West Coast Model EU, mentor and tutor for low-income students. Currently a volunteer with local nonprofits focusing on at risk youth. I have been a leader in helping receive grants, improve thier operations, while also working with the youth. I am also involved with diversity recruitment at IBM.

Goals: I want to switch to a top tier consulting firm (MBB +
Booz + Deloitte) doing strategy work in tech or healthcare. After a few years I would like to switch to a nonprofit consulting firm (Bridgespan or FSG), and eventually work in sr. leadership at a nonprofit or foundation.

28 yr-old (at matriculation) white male, 1st generation college student, raised by single mom.

Targets:

Kellogg
Tuck
Ross
Darden
Haas
Chicago

I am most interested in when I should apply. I would like to start an mba before I'm 30. But that would require me to matriculate with either 2-3 years of experience. However, my work experience while in graduate school was with positions that require a bachelors degree. Also, I spent 2 years as a volunteer with leadership responsibilities. Would all of these experiences combined be enough to get into any of the programs listed above.

Hello,

Great profile! Are you planning to take the GMAT? You'll have to double check each school individually, but not all schools actually accept the GRE. Just something you should be aware of.

Your profile is pretty strong - great academic record. Your professional experience is somewhat surprising given your academic background, but being a consultant at IBM is a strong position. With 2 years on the job there, hopefully you've had an opportunity to demonstrate leadership, work in and lead teams (informally), and have a positive impact on the firm (e.g., your diversity recruiting work). I do think that given your LDS mission, graduate education and internships, you'd qualify in terms of # of years of experience. Your community activities sound robust and will go a long way in justifying your long term goals. Finally, I think being a first-gen college student will be a good part of your story and show personal character, values, etc.

So, I'd say you could go ahead and apply now (caveat: may need to take the GMAT!) and see what happens. Worst case scenario you don't get in and you work another year, then apply again. You don't have anything to lose this way. Your school list looks pretty good to me based on your goals, but keep in mind that Haas and Tuck have incredibly low acceptance rates due to their tiny class size. This makes them even more competitive. You might swap one of them for a safer school more similar to Darden in rankings/difficulty.

Hope that helps,
