Profile Evaluation

by enakamura19 Sat Apr 28, 2012 11:56 pm

Hi,
I'm in a little bit of a unique situation and am looking for some guidance.

Profile:
25, Female, Dual US and Japan Citizenship, Bilingual, Grew up in Japan for 5 years when I was younger.
Played for the Japanese National Hockey Team for 6 years
3.0 GPA from Top NESCAC School, Majored in History of Art and Architecture, played on the Varsity Hockey team 4 yrs.
Went to a top New England Prep School and graduated with high honors.
Have not taken GMAT, scheduled for May 7, Practice scores are around 560, hoping to break 600...
3 years work experience at top insurance company wholesaling retirement investments.

As you can see my GMAT and GPA is nothing to write home about. I am looking at part time programs and want to stay within the company because we have a huge global initiative where I can use my language abilities.
My #1 West coast choice is UCLA Fully Employed MBA but my gut says that is a stretch especially since I would be applying fourth round unless I wait until next year. On the East Coast Boston College Evening MBA is my #1 choice.

My questions are...Do I have a realistic chance at Anderson's Part time program? Would you advise even submitting my application this year to give it a shot?
I've heard Part time programs are less competitive so will my credentials be sufficient for either school?
What is your advise for highlighting my unique achievements?

Thank you!

Hi! The UCLA program is very competitive, and the median GMAT is a 690. If you could get a score of 650, you would be in a much better spot than with a 600. However, a score of 600 is solidly within the range for incoming students at BC. That being said, the GMAT score isn't the only factor that AdComs look at when evaluating the candidacy of an MBA applicant. They will assess you on your professional accomplishments, your outside activities where you show leadership and your recommendations. I think your hockey experiences could help to differentiate you from other applicants - you not only played for many years but also were a member of the Japanese National team.

Best of luck,

Rachel Beck
