Profile Evaluation

by nicholas.hartt Mon Nov 28, 2011 10:29 pm

Please help evaluate my profile:

Reach: Harvard, Wharton
Target schools: Columbia, Chicago, Dartmouth, Yale
Competitive: Rice, Boston College, Carnegie

GMAT 710 (Q45, V41)

Undergrad: Mass Maritime Academy,3.7 GPA, BS International Maritime Business

Leadership: Graduated as 3rd highest ranking cadet, charged with leading and maintaining discipline system at MMA, 3 year Student Honor Board Representative for my class

Work Experience:5 years as Dry Bulk Ocean Freight Trader Ag/Energy Commodity Firm. Trade physical market and FFA derivative markets. International experience working cohesively with Swiss and Australian Freight Offices and a barrage of international vendors and customers worldwide.

Age: 28

To strengthen/refresh my quant skills, I intend to take the MBAMATH Online course

My MBA goal is to move into a sales/trading role in IB, preferably trading but alternatively I could also consider a career in consulting utilizing my international transportation experience

If it would strengthen my profile, I would considering holding my applications for 1-2 more years and further build on the work experience component

Pleased to hear your honest feedback.

Hi Nicholas,

Thanks for writing in. An additional 1-2 years of experience isn't necessary, as you're already above the median age of most MBA entering classes, and we're seeing that top-tier schools are actually looking a bit more toward younger candidates. Your college and work experience are going to differentiate you for sure, your challenge will be to explain what your work responsibilities have been in layman's terms, and how do you intend to transfer this experience, plus an MBA, into a successful job in S&T?

While I have no problem with the school selection you listed, I do want to point out that admissions to Chicago and Columbia, in particular, can be just as difficult as HBS and Wharton, just to help set expectations.

Best of luck,

Daniel Richards
