Profile evaluation

by AlexP Sat Nov 12, 2011 7:46 pm

Hello,

I have just taken the GMAT and am now preparing my applications.
I would be interested to have your opinion about the relevance of my profile for the MBA programs I am considering ?
Also is my estimation of safety/reach/stretch correct ?

[MBA programs]
- Stretch
Haas, Kellogg
- Reach
Carnegie Mellon, Georgia Tech, Boston University
- Safety
George Washington, Wisconsin

[Profile]
30 year old - French - male

GMAT
Total 710 (92%)
Quant 48 (80%)
Verbal 40 (89%)
AWA awaiting result

Education
- MSc in Telecoms (University of Bristol - UK)
overall grade 72% (equivalent GPA: 3.89)
- Engineer diploma (Masters degree French engineering school)
overall grade 60% (equivalent GPA: 3.3)

Work experience
7 years as electronics development engineer for Toyota Europe
(2yrs graduate program, 2yrs Engineer, 3yrs Senior Engineer)
3 of those 7 years spent in Japan at R&D Headquarters
(leadership experience limited to supplier management)

Extra
- school:
classical piano (10yrs)
- uni:
member (1yr) and then president (1yr) of student run consulting company (France)
member of stage technician association (UK)
- work:
unfortunately nothing to put forward

Goal
My expectation from an MBA is to change from current electronics project management role to a strategy and technology management role in high tech company.
(hence my choice of programs with Technology Management tracks)

My concerns are with my not so varied work experience and inexistent extra-curricular activities since uni.

Looking forward to your reply, thanks.

Hi,

Thanks for being so specific with your schools. I think your assessment is on-target. Boston University should likely be between reach and safety, I'd just call it "competitive."

Your GMAT is strong for these schools and I think you're biggest challenge will be explaining specifically how an MBA will help you make the transition you're seeking, as well as why you waited until now to seek the advanced degree.

Best of luck,
