Profile evaluation

by seraphicgirl Sat Aug 27, 2011 11:57 am

Hi,

My name is Anupama and I would like it if you would take out time to evaluate my profile.
I am 25yr old female from India and my GMAT score is 700 (46Q, 40V)

I did my schooling from a prestigious all girls convent school and in high school I scored 90% average marks with a distinction in Social Science (98%) and exceptional marks in mathematics (98%).
Thereafter I chose Medicine as my core subject-for pre-college and had Biology, Chemistry, Physics and English as my major subjects and I scored 67% marks in my board exams.

In school, I took part in various local/school level art contests and was always on top of my class. Other than that, I was in the Badminton team of my School.

However, after my class XII, i realized that I did not want to continue with medicine and even though i was getting admission in dental science courses, i opted against it. Instead, I joined one of the top fifteen Law Colleges in India.

While in college, i was a high scorer and came in the top 20% of my class. I often took part in debates and group discussions and was an anchor for various events in college. I also organized various inter-college level competitions.

While in college, I extensively took part in National Level Moot Court Competitions and was also selected to represent my college for the Jessup's International Moot Court Competition.

Other than this, I write poems and short stories, and maintain a two blogs-one for each kind of writing. I have won awards for my writing-both fiction and non-fiction.

Apart from this, I have interned with Punjab Human Rights commission(1 month) and with eminent lawyers of the country who are known as the top 3 lawyers of the nation.

Since the past one year, ever since i passed out of college, I have been working with a national level government bank in the financial capital of india-bombay. I work as an Asst. Manager Law and look into various contracts which the bank enters into on national and international level. I'm also involved with keeping a track of the functions/workings of law officers working with the bank in other parts of the country.

The reason why i want to do an MBA is firstly because i want to expand my father's office-he is also a lawyer and works independently. and secondly, because i would like to use all my creative energy to run a successful business venture in the form of a restaurant which will inculcate various aspects of my personality and would be a unique concept store.

Kindly evaluate my profile and let me know which schools i should apply to which will help my case and where I will be able to opt for both finance and entrepreneurship.

I'm hoping my profile makes sense!!!!

Thanks!

Hi Anupama,

Thanks for sharing your background details. The biggest challenge I see for you is selling the schools on a clear story. If you don't explain it well, a reader could interpret your background as noncommittal since you went from medicine to law, and now want to go to business school. Take the time to explain how your law experience led you to want to expand your father's firm. I'd almost encourage you to not talk about the restaurant goal, as again it could make you seem unfocused.

In terms of credentials I think you should be looking at top-20 schools, with perhaps 1 or 2 in the top-12 range.

Best of luck,

Daniel Richards
