Profile evaluation

by neerajsenguttuvan Mon May 16, 2011 11:01 am

Hi - I am an UG engineering student from India.
I have scored around 720-750 in all my Manhattan mocks and will be taking my GMAT next week.

I would solicit ur advice on areas for improvement and hope u will shed light on my chances in getting through to such prestigious b-schools.

Thank you in advance!

Hi neerajsenguttuvan,

Thanks for sharing your background and congratulations on your ambitions to apply for a slot in the 2+2 or Silver Scholars program. If indeed you do get that 720-750 score that you indicated, then your GMAT will be in very good shape. I think challenge will be to answer the standard essay questions in a clear and compelling manner that explains why an MBA is a logical part of your plans.

From the information you provided, it appears that your background is fairly technical in nature, and candidates with similar backgrounds often fail to present their experience clearly. Remember admissions officers are reading thousands of applications and so it's incumbent on you to make yours clear, easy to read, and have the reader wanting to learn more.

On a cursory glance, it does seem that the components are there to make your competitive for these programs (again, assuming the GMAT comes back at where you indicated), but without having a clearer understanding of your background and leadership potential, it's difficult for me to give a more concrete opinion.

Best of luck with your applications!

I got 720 in my GMAT. I have scored 740 in 4 out of the 6 Manhattan mocks. Is it enough for HBS 2+2 or should I take another test as I am confident that I can better my result.

Ur advise would be invaluable. Is 720 enough because my college cgpa is just above average or will a 750 help make up a bit for my cgpa.

Thanks.

Hi again,

Thanks for the follow-up. First, I want to clarify that in business school applications there really is no such thing as a GMAT score being "enough." GMAT is just one part of the application -- along with academics, work experience, leadership potential, extracurriculars, etc.

A 720 is a great score and should pass any sort of litmus test that a school applies to your application. Of course a 750 is better than a 720, but it's essentially diminishing returns at that point. My hunch is that you're better off investing the time you would spend preparing for and taking the GMAT again, and instead using that time on your essays and focusing your "why MBA" story.

Best of luck,

Daniel Richards
