Profile evaluation

by abhi123amir Wed Apr 06, 2011 7:41 am

I want to do 1 year mba in IT from reputed school. My brief profile is below .I want to do mba since it would accelerate my career growth and can open up more opportunities like business analysis and managerial posts which would otherwise take long time .
Age-26, Male
Btech from Regional Engineering College , Suratkal.Specialization- Civil.
12th-73%
10th-92%
Workin as software professional in TCS .Experience-4 years .
Acheivements - Several Client appreciation mails. 2 Awards . 2- Microsoft certifications. Nothing significant in 10th and 12th.
Extra curricular- Average. Nothing significant.Dont have experience of leading a team.

What should be my target gmat score for this profile. I feel my extra curriculars are weak and havent got any accomplishments in 10th and 12th. However i have done very well in work ex.Is it sufficient to get an admission in b school that i aim for (sp jain dubai and singapore, UK b school, ISB)?Appreciate your inputs and views

Hi abhi,

Thanks for writing in. Unfortunately I don't know too much about the specific type of program you are looking for. Many candidates with IT backgrounds that I work with are seeking an MBA to diversify their skills, but it appears you want to actually specialize in IT within an MBA.

Since you seem to have a target list of schools, you can easily go on to their web sites and learn what the median GMAT is for the most recent class, as well as the middle range of GMAT scores. This should give you a clear idea of where you'd want to score on the test.

As some general advice, I would advise you to focus on extracurriculars and achievements since you've left undergraduate, as those hold a lot more weight in the grad school process. You'll also want to make your "why MBA" story more specific; schools want to hear more about the skills you wish to learn and how they influence your short-term goals, rather than just opening up new opportunities.

Best of luck!
