Profile Evaluation

by pmmalkan+gmat Fri Dec 17, 2010 12:45 pm

Hi,

Kindly help me evaluate my profile to see whether I am a fit for my target schools. Thank you very much.

1. Indian/Computer Engineer/Female
2. Good academics;
3. GMAT - 720 (Q48, V41)
4. Work Experience - 3.5 years till date(Started of as a programmer and moved into a business development/marketing/sales role in the IT industry)
5. Tremendous extracurriculars at college and work
-- community service (I started my own NGO)
-- sports/music/dance/speech and drama
-- teaching/training/mentoring at undergrad and office
6. Have several important demonstrated leadership experiences

Goals - Education related/Social entrepreneurship

I understand I am from an over represented group (my GMAT is also OK comparatively) but can I differentiate myself on the basis of my growth at work, my goals, my leadership experiences, and my extracurriculars ?

I am aiming for Darden, Berkeley, Cornell, and McCombs. I am really really keen on Darden or Berkeley.

Please be honest and frank with me.

Thank you very very much for all your time and help,

Best Regards,
Priya

Hi Priya,

Thanks for writing in. I think you have a very realistic assessment of your candidacy, understanding what your weaknesses are (overrepresented group), and choosing an appropriate list of target schools. Your goals of going into social entrepreneurship are one way to differentiate yourself, as is your community service. Starting an NGO is directly related to your goals, and is an activity most candidates will not be able to claim.

I would say you should be competitive at the schools you listed. Since Darden and Berkeley are at the top of your list, make sure to explain why they would be a great fit in your essays.

Good luck!
