Profile Evaluation

by jamisonhowdon Fri Nov 05, 2010 12:32 pm

Hi,

I am planning on applying to some schools this year (2nd round) and I am hoping to get some advice on how competative my apps are to the schools I am applying to.

My Profile:
Gender: Female
Age: 25
Undergrad: ASU, BS in Architecture, 3.5 gpa, Graduated 5/2009
Work Experience:
-1 year Marketing Intern at a non-profit, volunteer (I wanted to make a career change)
-2 years at a top Architecture firm in AZ. (1.5 part time while in school)
-1 year as a receptionist and then promoted to project manager while in school
-<1 year as receptionist at KSU
GMAT: 640, planning to retake

I know that my work experience is my weakest area but I have a lot of volunteering and community service, both in the US and internationally. I am planning on going into marketing.

The schools I plan to apply to are (full-time):
University of Iowa, Tippie
Southern Methodist, Cox
Emory, Goizueta

Thank you!

Hi Jamison

Thanks for writing in. I think Emory would be a reach but the other two could be in play with your GMAT score. You seem to have the right assessment that your work experience is a weakness. If your sure you want to apply now, then you'll need to express why it's important for you to get an MBA now, rather than wait another 1-2 years to gain more experience. You'll also want to detail how you plan to transition into marketing -- what skills from your past can you tap into? What tools can an MBA provide to fill your gaps?

Good luck!
