Profile Evaluation

by gee_cue Mon Nov 01, 2010 9:25 pm

Hi,

I took the GMAT this weekend and scored 680 (Q47 V37). It was my second go at it, and I scored the EXACT same as the first time. I would prefer a higher score, given the schools I am targeting, but don't want to write it again.

mbaMission, can you please evaluate my profile, and comment on my chances to get into the schools I am gunning for (LBS, INSEAD, Wharton, Duke):

Age: 30
Undergrad: Engineering from top 20 school in US (3.0 GPA - it was a tough program)
Masters: Financial Engineering from top 20 school in US
CFA Charterholder
Work Experience: 5 years in Proprietary Trading at 2 IBs (quant trading)
No real leadership experience since my job is fairly research intensive
Small amount of extra-cirricular (volunteered at Museum).Limited because of demanding hours at job

Do I have a chance at these schools, with my low GPA and little to non-existent leadership and extra-cirricular activities? I would be giving up a fairly well-paying position (>200k/year) - would this matter at all? I wish to do something more socially responsible and relevant to the business world.

Please let me know if you can!

Thanks!

Hi gee_cue,

Thanks for writing in. When examining a profile such as yours, the schools are going to want to know what motivates you to make this career change. They want to see that you've thought it through and can elaborate why this change makes sense, and how an MBA from their school is a good fit for those goals.

The fact that you are giving up a high-paying job shouldn't be much of a factor, except it can strengthen your argument that you are serious about this change as you will likely earn less in a social-responsibility role upon completing an MBA.

Your lack of leadership and volunteer experience will be a weakness, and unfortunately your GMAT/GPA don't really balance it out. With the information I have, I would classify Wharton and INSEAD as reaches, and LBS and Duke as competitive.

Best of luck!
