Profile evaluation - retake GMAT?

by Appurupai Mon Oct 25, 2010 5:27 am

Hi!

I just took the GMAT today and scored poorly in quant (660: Q40, V41). Since I work as an engineer AND that my GPA is average, I am afraid it will raise red flags. I was hoping to look into scholarships but I can imagine that stronger GMAT scores are required.

I think I could improve my score by retaking the exam (I used to score around 45-50 in quant during MGMAT prep tests) but it would still require hard work and I am wondering if it is worth doing so.

I am a French native speaker and I have been working for the past three years in Japan (the working-language is Japanese).
Although my extracurricular activities are limited compared to US standards I think that my overall profile is quite unusual and I hoped it could make up for the low quant score. Besides there isn't much time before the admission deadlines and I still have a lot to do for the essays.

I am quite confused and would be glad to here your recommendations. Many thanks!

Here is my detailed profile:
Program: MBA(FT)
Area of interest in MBA : General management, MOT

Work experience: 3 years in R&D (automotive industry)
Age:27
Gender:F
Target School: Haas, Standford, ULCA, NYU

Hi Appurupai,

Thanks for writing in. It does seem that there could be some interesting aspects to your application, but you don't really give me enough details to give a substantive evaluation. For example, I know you speak French and worked in Japan, but don't know the context behind these international experiences.

Given that you already have an advanced degree in engineering, I think you may want to consider retaking the GMAT before applying to the schools you listed, as your overall and quant score are a bit low for those schools. You will also want to tell a clear story as to why you are seeking this second advanced degree -- what can an MBA help you achieve that you can't with your previous Masters?

Best of luck!

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for your kind comment. I will definitely retake the GMAT and hope a higher score can help me get in.

As for your question, I was born and raised in Switzerland. After graduation, I had an opportunity to do an internship in Japan and later got a job offer from the company. This is my first job an my first international experience.

Although I do love technology what I enjoy the most is making products out of it and the relationships we can create with the consumers. Also, I don't see myself as a pure researcher or developer and I want to orient my career to the business side. An MBA would serve me well to get the skills I currently lack (product management and brand management are two fields I particularly would like to work in post-mba).

That said, I do have the feeling that my goals aren't narrow enough to convince the schools. Do you think this might be an issue in my case and how do you recommend I approach this?

Also, are there any schools other than the one that I mentioned that you think could fit my technological-international approach of doing business?

Hi again,

While you may not have it all figured out yet, it seems like you know enough about the specifics you want to learn in business school to write focused essays. For example, you could write how you want to go in brand management to learn more about consumer preferences, in order to eventually help develop new consumer technology products.

As for other schools, MIT-Sloan came to mind, but again you'd want to try and raise your GMAT to be competitive there. Perhaps other schools that also have strong engineering programs -- maybe Purdue or Georgia Tech?

Good luck!
