Profile Evaluation Required (GMAT 670)

by qa.mayank.agrawal Thu Nov 24, 2011 12:06 pm

Hi,

I have recently given GMAT and my score details are as follows:
Overall - 670
Quant - 51
Verbal - 28

I am working in a reputed IT organization and my total work experience is 4 years in IT industry.
I also have experience as a module lead in my project, and have been involved in communicating with clients on day-to-day basis. I have received couple of On the Spot awards for my performance at work.

Before the exam, I gave GMAT Prep and MGMAT tests and consistently scored around 730 in all the exams. However, my verbal score dipped in the actual exam and affected my overall score. Will my verbal score affect my application or do schools generally look at overall score?

I have applied for the following universities:
University of Virginia (Darden)
Duke (Fuqua)
NYU Stern
UCLA
Dartmouth

Please let me know what my chances are to get into these schools. Also what are my chances if I apply to some state universities such as Illinois, Ohio, Michigan

Also, since I will be applying in second round, which school may provide me the best chance for scholarships?

Hi Qa,

Thanks for writing in. First, in regards to scholarships, I really can't comment on anything specific there. Each school holds different scholarship and may be looking for specific types of candidates to fit those needs, but there's no magic solution to say where you stand the best chance of scholarship.

Indeed I think you're aiming a bit high with your current GMAT score. While the 670 is below the median at the schools you list, what concerns me more is the inbalance between the Quant and Verbal. Schools will definitely notice the inbalance, and if you think you truly are capable of a 730, I'd suggest a retake of the exam.

With what you've shared before, I would have to rate NYU/UCLA/Dartmouth as "reach," and UVA/Duke as "near-reach" schools. Michigan would also be a reach, but Illinois and Ohio State should be competitive for you.

Best of luck,

Daniel Richards
